Retire in Place

woman relaxing on couch

Home is where the heart is, and it’s where we feel most comfortable.

Being able to safely stay where we’ve built our lives as we transition into the golden years is priceless, and TRS understands the importance our retirees place on it. That’s why our TRS-Care health plans have benefits that can help you age with dignity in the place you hold most dear.

Before you jump into your plan benefits, here are some simple things you can do today to make your home safe.

Do Today For a Safer Tomorrow

  • Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing.
  • Keep walkways clear of cords, clutter, and small furniture.
  • Install grab bars in showers and near toilets.
  • Add handrails on both sides of stairways.
  • Use non-slip mats in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Put a small bell on your pet’s collar so you know when they’re around your feet
  • Add nightlights in hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
  • Increase lighting near stairs and entryways.
  • Use motion-sensor lights outside and in dark areas.
  • Replace round doorknobs with lever-style handles.
  • Keep commonly used items within easy reach.
  • Consider a shower chair or raised toilet seat if mobility becomes a concern.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts in an easy-to-find place.
  • Install and regularly test smoke detectors.
  • Consider a medical alert device if living alone.
  • Keep flashlights and a basic emergency kit on hand.
  • Check in regularly with friends, family, or neighbors.
  • Participate in community events, fitness classes, or volunteer opportunities.
  • Use video calls or virtual programs to stay connected when travel is difficult. Social connection is an important part of successfully aging in place.

You can find many documents that can help you prepare at our Plan With Purpose, Live With Confidence webpage that features a “Plan With Purpose” packet.

Power of Attorney: Be Ready When It Counts

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that lets you choose someone you trust to act on your behalf if you’re ever unable to handle your financial or legal matters. That can include managing retirement benefits, signing documents, or making important decisions for you.

A Medical Power of Attorney is a separate legal document that lets someone make health care decisions for you, like choosing treatments or speaking with a doctor if you are unable to.

Why It Matters
Life doesn’t always give us a heads-up. Putting POAs in place before you need it helps avoid delays, court involvement, or added stress for your family. It ensures your wishes are clear, and that the right person is ready to step in if needed.

Protect Your Privacy And Your Choices
With POAs, you decide who has access and what authority they have. That means your information stays in trusted hands, and your preferences — not someone else’s — guide decisions.

Benefits at a Glance
•    Keeps your financial and retirement matters moving without interruption
•    Reduces stress on loved ones during unexpected situations
•    Gives you control over who can act on your behalf
•    Helps avoid costly or time-consuming legal processes later
•    Allows your health to be taken care of to if you are incapacitated

Take the Next Step
You’ve worked hard for your benefits – make sure they’re protected. Consider setting ups POAs and keeping them updated as your life changes. It’s a simple step today that can make a big difference tomorrow.

If you want to have a POA in place so that someone can act on your behalf for TRS purposes, there are a few requirements to keep in mind. Visit the Member Accessibility webpage to learn more about the TRS requirements for POAs.
